Khan Academy, like many great things, started almost by accident. Sal Khan was in Boston and she was in New Orleans. He was tutoring his cousin Nadia remotely. Other cousins wanted in on the tutoring, so as he was repeating lessons, he made videos instead. When the cousins first watched the videos, they told Sal they like him recorded better than in person. In many interviews he mentions this feedback feeling backhanded. He came to see the real feedback there is that they like pausing and rewatching videos rather than being asked, "do you understand?" and feeling put on the spot.
